Uber and Lyft have turned back the clock on nearly a century of gains by the labor movement. The low-road duopoly these companies have created now subjects 85,000 drivers in New York City and millions more across the world to extreme exploitation. Workers have sought to counter the predatory capitalism of Uber and Lyft with the standard tactical repertoire of today’s US labor movement: protests, strikes, litigation, and legislation. But for every step forward, Uber and Lyft find a loophole to push us two steps back. It’s time for a more direct approach: worker ownership.
The Drivers Cooperative is bringing about system change through a driver-owned rideshare cooperative: Co-op Ride. In this worker cooperative, drivers own the platform, control hiring, elect the Board of Directors, and share in profits. Our goal is to revolutionize the rideshare platform economy through driver ownership.
